说明: 这大片发光气体与尘埃云,对地球[2]上的天文学家来说形如鸟面,故有海鸥星云[3]之暱称。 这幅[4]呈现宇宙之鸟[5]的影像,涵盖了大犬座[6]最亮星天狼[7] 方向[8]、分跨在银河系盘面二侧的1.6度天区。 此区域[9]当然还有带着其他编录号的天体,其中最醒目的为NGC 2327[10],而这团紧凑、内藏大质量恒星的尘埃发射与反射星云,则是海鸥的头部[11]。 以原子氢[12]的泛红辉光[13]为主色的这个气体、尘埃云和年轻亮星复合体,如果用3,800光年[14]的估计距离来换算,其跨幅超过100光年[15]。
