Dr. Xuan (Sharon) Di is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at Columbia University in the City of New York and co-chairs the Smart Cities Center in the Data Science Institute. Dr. Di directs the DitecT (Data and innovative technology-driven Transportation) Lab, focusing on innovative transportation systems research. Her overarching mission is to empower mobility for all, with a strong emphasis on using technology for social good. Currently, Dr. Di is pioneering the development of digital twins for urban transportation management, leveraging cyber-physical systems technology. Her research encompasses autonomous vehicle control on shared roads, multi-modal mobility optimization, and transportation-health intersections.
I am seeking to recruit 1 PhD student for Columbia University starting Fall 2025. The research directions for PhD students in my group include:
- Computer Vision from Traffic Videos (such as Scene/Knowledge Graph Extraction and Construction, face recognition and pose estimation)
- Policy Evaluation with Transfer Learning based on various sensors such as dash cam and infrastructure-based cameras
- VR/AR development for Traffic Simulation and Digital Twin Development
Additionally, there are research opportunities for senior undergraduate and master students interested in gaining experience related to autonomous driving, computer vision, game theory, and mobility optimization. Priority will be given to students interested in applying for the PhD position.
Expected Qualifications:
- Undergraduate or master’s degree in fields such as Computer Science, Operations Research, or related areas with a strong background in computer vision or statistics.
- Experience in computer vision, VR/AR experimentation, transfer learning, or game theory methods with interest in applications to transportation
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills with experience or a strong interest in autonomous driving and vision-based solutions for transportation
- Proficiency in coding and working with massive datasets
- Good communication skills, collaboration experience, and a strong motivation
Students interested in applying should email Dr. Di at sharon.di@columbia.edu with their CV, transcript, and a brief statement on their motivation to pursue a PhD in this area, or directly apply via the program application portal (due Dec 15). Please allow time for a response.
