Electromagnetic tracking systems utilise time-varying magnetic fields to sense 3D position and orientation. Field sensing is achieved using inductive pick-up coils. A Helmholtz coil can be used establish a field of a known strength and frequency to characterise the performance of induction sensors, with metrics including sensitivity and linearity. This project builds on previous work and aims to develop a robust and cost-effective sensor testing platform.
- Evaluate and understand the existing Helmholtz system
- Perform a requirements analysis on the system and determine areas for improvement and optimisation for the design
- Refine the existing Helmholtz circuit design for stability, linearity and dynamic range
- Design and prototype a revised printed circuit board implementation of the Helmholtz circuit
- Develop a Python-based user interface to allow users to easily perform test routines and save results to Excel format
